Boca Juniors and River Plate tied 1-1 at the Monumental. Gago was sent off after an inexistent penalty, in the first half. The match should have been postponed because of the heavy rain conditions, but the referee decided to play. The pitch was full of puddles and the ball did not roll. Under the circumstances, the players abused of long passes and centres. On the 22nd minute, Boca broke the deadlock. Federico Carrizo executed the free kick and Lisandro Magallán connected the ball with a volley. This was the first goal of the defender in First Division. Firstly, Gabriel Mercado headed to the right post; secondly, Agustín Orion saved the shot of Ramiro Funes Mori, who was alone into the goal area. Five minutes before the end of the first half, the referee Mauro Vigliano ruled Fernando Gago had handled the ball and blew for a penalty. Also, Vigliano sent off Boca’s midfield, stating that he used it as last resource. Although Gago hit the ball only with his head and left foot, the referee awarded something he invented. By divine justice, Rodrigo Mora deflected the penalty kick, over the goalpost. Rodrigo Mora warned with a header, though Orion reacted perfectly. On the 78th minute, Boca’s goalkeeper responded badly to a weak header and Germán Pezzella scored on the rebound. With the game tied, the referee was encouraged to show Funes Mori the red card for a severe mistimed tackle. Before, when River was losing, Vigliano had not sent off Mercado for a similar action. At the end, any of both teams could have won the match. Andrés Chávez made a cross shot, but the ball bounced off Barovero’s body and ended out. Finally, Lucas Boyé, who was alone in the goal area, deflected his headed. Boca’s next match will be on October 12th at 6:15 p.m. (Argentina time) against Rosario Central at the Bombonera.
